Admission and hours checked July 27, 2026. “Free museum” can mean free permanent galleries, free general admission with paid special shows, or a free building whose exhibitions require advance booking. The four choices below state which version applies and give the address, closing day and a realistic visit length.

1. National Museum of Korea: best for a substantial first visit

Address: 137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu. Admission: permanent exhibition free; some special exhibitions paid. Regular hours: 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday; until 9 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday. The museum closes on January 1, Lunar New Year’s Day and Chuseok. Temporary schedules can override these hours.

Allow at least two to three hours. The collection is too large for a useful “see everything” route. A first-time visitor can pair the Korean History galleries with one art section, then stop. The grounds and nearby Hangang views are optional in poor weather; the indoor collection alone justifies the journey.

2. Seoul Museum of History: best introduction to the city

Address: 55 Saemunan-ro, Jongno-gu. Admission: free. Hours: 9 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday until 10 p.m. Closed: Mondays and January 1. The museum lists lockers and accessibility information on its visitor page.

The permanent exhibition explains Seoul’s physical growth, daily life and urban change. It is a practical first- or second-day stop because later palace, neighborhood and transport choices make more sense with that context. Ninety minutes is enough for a focused route; two hours allows reading and models without rushing.

3. SeMA Seosomun Main Branch: best central art stop

Address: 61 Deoksugung-gil, Jung-gu. Admission: free except selected special exhibitions. Hours: Tuesday–Thursday 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; weekend hours vary by summer and winter schedule. Closed: Mondays.

Check the current exhibition calendar before traveling. Contemporary-art museums change installations, so gallery access can be limited between exhibitions even when normal building hours are published. Seosomun is easy to combine with City Hall, but resist adding a distant museum on the same afternoon.

4. SeMA Seo-Seoul Museum of Art: best when your route is southwest

Address: 65 Siheung-daero 79-gil, Geumcheon-gu. The official directions use Geumcheon-gu Office Station Exit 1. General admission is free except for designated special exhibitions. The branch follows extended weekday and season-dependent weekend hours and closes on Mondays; confirm the exact day on its page.

This is not the default choice for a traveler staying in central Seoul. It becomes useful when your hotel, airport-side plan or other appointment is in the southwest. The value comes from fitting it into an existing route, not collecting another museum name.

Comparison before you leave

Venue Best use Suggested time Common mistake
National Museum of Korea Korean history and major collection 2–4 hours Trying to cover every gallery
Seoul Museum of History Understanding the city 1.5–2 hours Arriving on Monday
SeMA Seosomun Central contemporary-art stop 1–2 hours Ignoring installation closures
SeMA Seo-Seoul Southwest-Seoul route 1–2 hours Adding a long detour

What “free” does not cover

Budget for transport, lockers larger than the complimentary size, cafés, and any separately ticketed exhibition. Some venues require a free reservation for programs or capacity-controlled spaces. A free permanent collection is not proof that every gallery is free that day. The official ticket or exhibition page takes priority over a third-party listing.

A reliable museum-day sequence

  1. Choose one primary venue based on your district.
  2. Check its official notice board for temporary closures.
  3. Pick two galleries or one exhibition, not the whole building.
  4. Save the street address and Korean venue name.
  5. Keep a second indoor option within the same central area.

When the forecast is the reason for your museum day, start with the rainy-day routing guide. For events and temporary exhibitions beyond these permanent venues, use the official-event search method.

Official visitor pages
