A Korean food package is easier to understand when you read it in a fixed order: identify the product, inspect its ingredients and allergen information, find the date, and match the storage instructions to the way you will carry and eat it. The front photograph is useful for choosing a flavor. The small print decides whether the purchase fits your needs.
Research checked October 17, 2026. This guide explains label terms using Ministry of Food and Drug Safety information. It does not certify individual products, translate a particular manufacturer’s complete recipe or replace personal medical advice for a food allergy.
Start with the label panels that change the decision
| Wording | Meaning in this context | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| 제품명 | Product name | Match the exact variety, not only the brand or picture |
| 원재료명 | Ingredients | Read the full ingredient panel and any compound ingredients relevant to your restriction |
| 알레르기 | Allergy information | Look for the separate declaration as well as ingredients |
| 소비기한 | Use-by date | Read the complete date and any time, together with storage conditions |
| 보관방법 | Storage method | Check the required conditions before and after opening |
| 조리방법 | Preparation instructions | Establish whether it is ready to eat or requires the specified preparation |
| 영양정보 | Nutrition information | Identify whether figures refer to the whole pack or another stated quantity |
The MFDS food-labeling overview explains the role of ingredient, date, storage, warning, nutrition and allergen information. These panels answer different questions. A low number on a nutrition table does not establish that a product is free of an allergen, and a long printed date does not cancel refrigerated storage.
Read the exact variety, including the small name difference
Two packages with similar artwork can have different fillings, sauces or production statements. Match the full product name to the pack in your hand. A tuna rice item and a vegetable-looking rice item can both contain ingredients beyond their headline name; mayonnaise, seasoning and garnish still count.
For a translation app, photograph the panel flat, with enough light and no fold hiding a line. Include the heading and the end of the statement. If the app produces an incomplete sentence or an implausible ingredient, take a clearer image rather than treating the first translation as an answer. Keep the Korean original visible when asking the manufacturer or a competent speaker to clarify.
Use ingredient words as search aids, not a complete allergy screen
| Korean | English | Why the wider panel matters |
|---|---|---|
| 우유 / 대두 | Milk / soybean | A drink or sauce may contain them even when neither appears in the product name |
| 밀 / 메밀 | Wheat / buckwheat | A buckwheat-named noodle can also contain wheat or starch blends |
| 땅콩 / 호두 | Peanut / walnut | A topping or compound ingredient can matter as much as the main food |
| 새우 / 게 | Shrimp / crab | Seafood seasoning can be less visually obvious than a whole piece |
| 계란 / 알류 / 난류 | Egg / egg category | Egg can appear in a filling, coating or sauce |
These are selected recognition words, not the complete Korean allergen list. MFDS describes the categories subject to allergen labeling and the use of a separate declaration. Read every relevant statement on the actual package, including wording about shared production facilities. Do not interpret an unfamiliar facility statement as a guarantee that cross-contact cannot occur.
For a serious allergy, a store employee’s recognition of the flavor is insufficient evidence about the manufacturer’s production line. If the ingredient or cross-contact information cannot be understood confidently, choose another product or an appropriate provider who can answer the question. Our vegetarian ingredient guide addresses a different issue: animal-derived stock and seasonings. A vegetarian preference and a food-allergy requirement should not be treated as the same assessment.
Read the date together with its conditions
MFDS’s official explanation of use-by labeling ties the use-by period to compliance with the stated storage method. Do not read 소비기한 as permission to keep a chilled item wherever convenient until that date. Look for any time printed beside the date and distinguish a manufacturing date, 제조일자, from the consumption deadline.
You can still encounter other date terminology. The MFDS category explanation notes that the transition does not put every product category on an identical timetable, including particular refrigerated milk categories. The useful habit is to read the actual heading rather than assigning the same meaning to every date stamped on a carton.
Do not invent an extra number of safe days after the printed date. This article provides no universal extension for milk, rice, sandwiches or prepared meals. If the pack is damaged, the storage history is uncertain or the instruction cannot be read, a date alone cannot settle the decision.
Storage words decide when to buy
냉장보관 means refrigerated storage; 냉동보관 means frozen storage. 실온보관 indicates room-temperature storage under the product’s specified conditions, rather than permission to leave it in a hot vehicle or direct sun. Follow any temperature range actually printed. The retailer’s shelf location can help orient you, but it should not replace the label.
Opening can change the instructions. Find wording beginning 개봉 후, meaning after opening. A product that can be stored unopened without refrigeration may have a different instruction after the seal is broken. Do not use the unopened date as a timetable for keeping an opened container.
Plan the purchase around the journey. A chilled item bought beside the hotel and eaten promptly is a different logistical choice from the same item carried through several hours of sightseeing. If you cannot maintain the required conditions, buy closer to mealtime or choose another format. A hotel minibar’s appearance is not proof that it provides the particular storage temperature your food requires.
Preparation and packaging are separate checks
Identify whether the food is ready to eat, heat-and-eat or requires cooking. Read the product’s instructions for the correct appliance and container. A familiar food name does not establish that a particular wrapper, tray or lid can be microwaved. If the instructions specify removing a component, follow that instruction for that product rather than a method remembered from a different purchase.
This guide deliberately supplies no generic heating time or substitute cooking method. For meal-format choices and why cup noodles and rice boxes need different handling, see the convenience-store meal guide.
A short inspection before paying
- Confirm the exact product and variety.
- Read ingredients, allergen declarations and any relevant production warning.
- Locate the date heading and read the complete date and time.
- Check storage before and after opening against your actual journey.
- Establish the preparation method and equipment you will have.
- Keep the package information until the meal is finished, especially if you may need to ask a question.
When one of those steps remains unresolved, the answer is not to translate the front picture more confidently. Change the purchase. Label literacy is useful because it turns a vague impression into a specific, answerable question before the food leaves the shop.
